January 01/27/2009 - Leveraging Diversity for Success Summary/description: Dr. Cheryl L. Brown, an associate professor of political science, teaches courses in Chinese politics, East Asian foreign policy, language and politics, cyberspace and politics, and Internet law and policy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As an American Council on Education Fellow for 2007-2008, she spent the Fellowship year at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina as her host institution. Professor Brown is the recipient of a National Science Foundation award to research triangular cyber networks and electronic government. She has traveled extensively to Asia to conduct research on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, regional identity, smart cards, and information and communication technologies in the Asia Pacific. Her current research focuses on privacy and security issues in radio frequency identification (RFID). For more information, contact Jennifer or our webmaster. 02/21/2009 - "Introduce a Girl to Engineering" Girl Scout Event Summary/description: This event is one of our annual Career Guidance Outreach events. Hands on activities will provide the girls with examples of different areas of engineering. Sessions in the past have been Bridge Building (Structural Engineering), Chocolate Asphalt (Civil Engineering), Electric Gelatin (Electrical Engineering), Puffmobile (Mechanical Engineering), and Slime (Chemical Engineering). Volunteers are needed to lead sessions as well as help on the day of the event. Planning meeting for session leaders is February 6, 2009, 5:30 p.m. at 11522 Vista Haven Dr., Charlotte, NC.
