01/27/2009 - Leveraging Diversity for Success

Summary/description: Dr. Cheryl L. Brown, an associate professor of political science, teaches courses in Chinese politics, East Asian foreign policy, language and politics, cyberspace and politics, and Internet law and policy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As an American Council on Education Fellow for 2007-2008, she spent the Fellowship year at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina as her host institution. Professor Brown is the recipient of a National Science Foundation award to research triangular cyber networks and electronic government. She has traveled extensively to Asia to conduct research on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, regional identity, smart cards, and information and communication technologies in the Asia Pacific. Her current research focuses on privacy and security issues in radio frequency identification (RFID).

02/21/2009 - "Introduce a Girl to Engineering" Girl Scout Event

Summary/description: This event is one of our annual Career Guidance Outreach events. Hands on activities will provide the girls with examples of different areas of engineering. Sessions in the past have been Bridge Building (Structural Engineering), Chocolate Asphalt (Civil Engineering), Electric Gelatin (Electrical Engineering), Puffmobile (Mechanical Engineering), and Slime (Chemical Engineering). Volunteers are needed to lead sessions as well as help on the day of the event.

Planning meeting for session leaders is February 6, 2009, 5:30 p.m. at 11522 Vista Haven Dr., Charlotte, NC.

RSVP by Friday, February 6 to be a session leader.
RSVP by February 14 to help generally the day of the event.

Summary/description: Last year SWE-CM members and associates had a great time participating in the Carowinds Education Days, sharing with middle and high school students the application of math and science with the exciting example of roller coasters! This year the event has grown substantially, and Carowinds has again invited us to be a part of this successful event.

SWE will support Friday, May 15, and five volunteers are needed from 9am-12pm. Lunch is free, and then we are welcome to stay the rest of the day. The other Education Days are: May 8, May 29, and June 2-5; you are welcome to support one of these days as well.

This year we are engineers/scientists who are mobile with carts, each with a science demonstration, this corresponds to "Part 3 - Hands On Field Activity in the attached Program Overview. Carowinds will provide a script for each demonstration. For more information, please visit the website.
