01/15/2008 - SWE Web Seminar: Executive Coaching: How It Can Boost Your Career
Tuesday, 5:00pm
Cost: Free for SWE Members; $49 for non-members. Register now!

Summary/description: The skills and expertise that enable a technical contributor to move ahead in her career are most often different from the skills that enable her to succeed as a leader. This critical shift involves moving from technical know-how and superior problem solving skills to using emotional intelligence competencies to work through others. These are competencies that are best developed in an intentional way, practicing behavioral changes over time. An executive coach can provide targeted support and resources to help you develop the learning experiences you need to develop leadership proficiency.

Speaker: Michele Vitti, Founder and Principal of Sunata Consulting

About the Speaker: Michele Vitti, founder and principal of Sunata Consulting, has been a consultant to businesses around leadership and team development for 15 years and has many more years of experience as a coach. Michele's expertise is in helping leaders sharpen their inner edge; that is, building their capacity to know and use their unique talents; to understand, motivate and influence others; and to navigate through organizational culture and political dynamics. Michele is an adjunct faculty member at Smith College Executive Education for Women, was a founding board member of the Executive Coaching Forum, and is a frequent speaker to professional groups. Michele holds an M.A. degree from Lesley University.

03/12/2008 - SWE Web Seminar: The Secret to Career Acceleration - Enjoy the Stretch Zone
Wednesday, 5:00pm
Cost: Free for SWE Members; $49 for non-members. Register now!

Summary/description: How comfortable are you with taking career risks? As engineers, you are focused on helping companies minimize risk. In contrast, women who advance to senior leadership roles have learned to get comfortable taking smart career risks. Smart career risk taking comes from understanding the four zones of performance: blah, comfort, stretch, and yikes. The stretch zone is characterized by trying out new behaviors that energize and allow growth without causing a "breakdown" response or significantly diminishing your effectiveness. The goal of this web seminar is to increase self-awareness of your stretch zone and what interpersonal and environmental elements you need to grow professionally.

04/03/2008 - Special Collegiate SWE Web Seminar: Four Secrets to Finding the Perfect Job
Thursday, 5:00pm
Register now!

Summary/description: How do you find your ideal job when you are ready to finish college?
What questions should YOU ask during the interview?
Why you should turn down a job offer that is not a good fit-even it means forgoing the 'big bucks'?

To answer these questions, you need a system for understanding and optimizing the match between yourself and your prospective job. Dr. Deborah Fisher, engineering professor from the School of Engineering at the University of New Mexico, shares four basic laws of what she calls "people physics," from her recently released national award-winning book (Financial Times Press, February 2008), Four Secrets to Liking Your Work. These laws teach us how to understand our own actions, how to work better with others and, most importantly, how to find the right position and then to be more successful once we're there. Much of what you were told about the "right" job for you...is wrong! This session will teach you how to "interview the interviewer," find the ideal job where you can be "in the zone," and become happy, productive, and successful when you get there.

Speaker: Dr. Deborah Fisher

About the Speaker: Dr. Fisher has both a masters and PhD degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively. She has over 30 years of engineering experience, half which was spent in the engineering and construction petrochemical industry overseeing multi-million dollar projects. The other half was spent in academia where she conducted productivity improvement research, utilizing computer modeling and knowledge based systems and artificial intelligence. She has served as director of the engineering management program at the University of Houston and the AGC Chaired professor at the University of New Mexico. She received the Society of Women Engineers Distinguished Engineering Educator award in 2005 and was named in the "Top 50 Trendsetters" in Public Works magazine in 2006.
