Citizen Schools Apprenticeship Ready to Begin

For the second time SWE-CM is pairing with NSBE to host an “Engineers Are Epic!” apprenticeship in connection with Citizen Schools.  Twenty sixth and seventh graders will have an opportunity to experience hands on problem solving over the nine week apprenticeship with activities such as building a catapult, creating slime and building an electrical circuit.  Following the apprenticeship the students present a WOW! event to the community where they teach back what they have learned.

Come on out and join us for a Thursday afternoon filled with fun and learning where you too can become a “Citizen Teacher!” Please see our calendar for details.

Planning Meeting for 2013-2014

A successful planning meeting was held by the Executive Board on Saturday September 7, 2013 at a member’s home on beautiful Lake Norman.  The calendar will be updated as dates are firmed up.  We were pleased to have two members of the UNCC SWE Section join us for the planning meeting.

On April 25, 2013, 20 sixth grade students from Martin Luther King Middle School taught back to the community the skills they learned in a 10-week engineering apprenticeship with Citizen Teachers from SWE-CM and NSBE-CAEC.

GoldieBlox Breaks into Toys R Us

We first brought you word of this exciting engineering toy for girls earlier in the year.  See info below for ways to show your support!!!

Drumroll please… GoldieBlox is in Toys R Us nationwide (!!!)

Your support made this possible. Watch our girls paint the pink aisle gold in this epic launch video: http://www.youtube.com/goldieblox

As exciting as this is, the odds are against us. We’ve been told that GoldieBlox can’t survive in mass stores next to Barbie. Convention says that engineering toys for girls are a “niche” for the affluent, and for the internet. Together, we must prove convention wrong. Here’s how you can help:

1) Share this video with your friends on Facebook
2) Go to your local Toys R Us and find GoldieBlox (it’s kind of like “Where’s Waldo?”)
3) Tweet or Instagram pictures of GoldieBlox on store shelves (#GoldieBloxintheWild)
4) Forward this email to 10 friends or family members

It’s time to march friends, family, and children into Toys R Us, look at the Barbies on the shelves, and then walk out with GoldieBlox instead.

March on,

Debbie + Team Goldie
